Welcome

Introduction

Welcome to the Blackhall Nursery website. Blackhall Nursery was set up in 1999 by a group of local parents to meet a need in the educational provision for Blackhall children - a feeder nursery for Blackhall Primary School. We now have up to 60 places - for 30 pre-schoolers in the morning and 30 pre-schoolers and three-year olds in the afternoon. All places are free and are funded by the City of Edinburgh Council. The Nursery is a registered charity.

Blackhall Nursery is in Partnership with the Council, but is run by staff with the support of the Management Committee who have responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Nursery. It is staffed by qualified childcare professionals who deliver the Scottish Executive's Curriculum 3-5 Years. We have a higher than required ratio of staff to children as research has indicated that this is the most important factor in Early Years education. Children at Nursery learn through play - staff support them in their development and aims.

Our goal is to provide a happy, caring environment for our children who are encouraged to learn and develop at their own pace. As a community nursery, feeding primarily into Blackhall School, we are keen for the children to develop a strong sense of themselves within a community context. Caring for one another and being aware of the wider community is part of our ethos - just as it is at Blackhall School.

We are very committed to building a partnership with parents and carers - parents are welcome to be as involved in the Nursery as they wish to be.  In 2005 the Nursery became a company limited by guarantee, managed by a voluntary Board of Directors and Management Committee, the composition of which is controlled by a body of Members.  All parents and carers are encouraged to become Members of the Nursery and put themselves forward for election to any of the other two groups, The Board or the Management Committee.

With the commitment and dedication of our wonderful staff, the reputation of Blackhall Nursery continues to grow. We are proud of our achievement thus far: our children thrive in a positive environment, before moving on confidently to school.

We look forward to welcoming you and your child.
